The Beaded Edge tyre, referred to as 'Clincher' in North America, was developed to avoid violating the Welch patented well based rim design. These were commonly fitted to cars up to about 1920 when the current design of tyres fwas universally adopted.
we are very fortunate that these Beaded Edge tyres are still in production by several manufacturers today and we can source brands such as Blockley, Ensign, Wards, Coker, Firestone, Waymaster and Excelsior in many sizes.
Whilst these tyres and tubes are now commonly available the difficulty remains in the fitting process. As these wheels have no 'well', they must be stretched over the rim flange. This is made possible by the absence of bead wires necessary for modern tyres fitted to well based rims.
At Stuckeys Old World Tyres we have developed techniques for fitting these tyres using modern machines. his eliminates the likelihood of damaging restored and repainted rims.
We are always happy to help customers with this fitting task without cost!
