Leigh Achterberg and Greg Fitzgerald outlasted the 1963 Jensen CV8 of Peter and Sari Ullrich after they overcame axle problems to finish in the second podium place.
Paul and Christine Freestone in their beautiful Aston Martin DB4 were third after the six challenging days, a further one minute and 14 seconds in arrears.
“It’s a relief – it’s the third time we’ve won our category, but it’s never easy,” Achterberg said.
“We had an off in Riana on Day Three, so this one’s definitely been the most stressful. We’ve had a few other issues along the way.“It’s been an interesting event with the merge of late classic and early classic from last year into the one handicap category.
“A lot of our late classic rivals from last year have moved into Classic GT, so our biggest competition this week was some of the earlier cars and to be honest, I thought before we got here a podium would be difficult, so it’s certainly a relief.”
Both Achterberg and Freestone used the dominant DUNLOP 03G, as did most winners in the event.
